Meet Robert Vasquez MAINTENANCE AIDE AND JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES R OBERT VASQUEZ has been with the Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC) family for five years. He is a frequent sight along Bedell Avenue in his vintage red pickup truck as he travels to VVRMC’s clinics delivering items from Materials Management, doing minor repairs and just being helpful in general. When one of the clinics needs something done, Vasquez is the first one called. “I just do the little stuff,” he says. “I call the big boys for anything major.” The “big boys” he is referring to are the VVRMC maintenance staff. His description of “little stuff ” includes a whole lot of repairs, upkeep, moving offices around and cleaning up when there is some kind of disaster. He does all this with kindness, smiles and a fantastic attitude. Vasquez was born and raised in Del Rio. He has two grown children and four grandkids. Everyone lives in the area, and the family spends a lot of time together. On the weekends, he likes to relax. “If there are sports on, that’s good enough for me,” he says. When asked what he likes best about his work, Vasquez responds: “I enjoy the girls at the clinics. They are all really good people, from the directors to the workers.” Everyone thinks he is “good people” too. Con frecuencia se lo ve a lo largo de la Avenida Bedell en su camioneta roja clásica mientras se dirige a las clínicas de VVRMC, donde entrega elementos de Gestión de Materiales, hace reparaciones menores y brinda ayuda en general. Cuando una de las clínicas necesita que se haga algo, Vasquez es a quien se llama primero. “Simplemente hago las cosas pequeñas”, dice. “Llamo a los ‘chicos grandes’ para todo lo importante”. Los “chicos grandes” a los que se refiere son el personal de mantenimiento de VVRMC. Su descripción de “cosas pequeñas” incluye muchas reparaciones, mantenimiento, traslado de oficinas y limpieza cuando hay algún tipo de desastre. Hace todo esto con amabilidad, sonrisas y una actitud fantástica. Vasquez nació y creció en Del Rio. Tiene dos hijos adultos y cuatro nietos. Todos viven en la zona y pasan mucho tiempo juntos en familia. Los fines de semana, le gusta relajarse. “Si hay deportes en la televisión, con eso me alcanza y sobra”, expresa. Cuando le preguntan qué es lo que más le gusta de su trabajo, Vasquez responde: “Disfruto con las niñas en las clínicas. Todas son personas realmente buenas, desde los directores hasta los trabajadores”. Todos piensan que también él es “buena gente”.
