These routine appointments with a health care provider are called well-baby visits. They benefit your baby in many ways. For starters, the provider will check to make sure your baby is growing and meeting certain developmental milestones. That way if there are any problems, they can be found and addressed early. “Your baby will get a head-to-toe assessment,” says Brisa Lopez, RN, Clinic Nurse Manager at Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC). During the visit, you can ask questions about caring for your little one, such as how to cope with colic or how to help your baby sleep through the night. Your baby will also get vital immunizations during well-baby visits. Children need preventive vaccines at all ages to stay protected against serious diseases. But they need a lot more of them when they’re babies, Lopez notes. Babies should have their first checkup when they’re 3 to 5 days old. Your baby’s next visit should be two weeks later. “We feel that this is when parents have the most questions,” Brisa Lopez, RN, says. After that, babies should continue to see their provider frequently, generally at ages 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months.
