Keeping Well/Mantenerse Sano 3 Renee’s story ONE EMPLOYEE’S PERSONAL BATTLE WITH COVID-19 L UCINDA RENEE MARTIN is the Director of Surgical Services at Val Verde Regional Medical Center. “You never think it is going to happen to you…until it does,” Renee says. She spiked a fever and began to feel very ill. She tested positive for the coronavirus. That meant 14 days of quarantine in a bedroom in her home— away from her husband and five children. “It was painful and exhausting,” she says. “The worst part was having to say goodnight to my kids by phone. “In health care we always hear, ‘Treat them like family.’ Well, here, they are your family—literally. The silver lining is the support one receives from the community. People offer food, compassion and love. There were so many people checking up on me, asking me how they could help. It was really amazing.” Wellness/Bienestar Lucinda Renee Martin, Director of Surgical Services, had to quarantine from her family after her COVID-19 diagnosis—but she still felt the love from her community. Tuvo fiebre alta y comenzó a sentirse muy mal. Tuvo un resultado positivo de coronavirus. Eso significó 14 días de cuarentena en un dormitorio de su casa, apartada de su esposo y sus cinco hijos. “Fue doloroso y agotador”, expresa. “Lo peor era decirles buenas noches a mis hijos por teléfono. “En la atención médica siempre escuchamos: ‘Trátelos como si fueran de la familia’. Bueno, aquí, son tu familia, literalmente. El lado positivo es el apoyo que uno recibe de la comunidad. La gente ofrece comida, compasión y amor. Tantas personas se interesaron por mí y me preguntaron cómo podían ayudar. Fue realmente increíble”. Lucinda Renee Martin, Directora de Servicios Quirúrgicos, tuvo que hacer cuarentena apartada de su familia después de su diagnóstico de COVID-19, pero aun así sintió el amor de la comunidad.
