8 Keeping Well/Mantenerse Sano New OB-GYN returns to a favorite town I T’S BEEN ALMOST 30 years since David Hernandez, MD, FACOG, last lived in Del Rio. And he’s very happy to be back. “I lived in Del Rio 29 years ago for 10 months, and I found the community was made up of the nicest people,” he remembers. “And when I visited back in May of this year, it was the same.” Dr. Hernandez is the new obstetrician/gynecologist (OB-GYN) at Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC). He comes to VVRMC after working for 15 years in his solo practice in the Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Hernandez chose to become an OB-GYN because “you get to take care of the most important people in the world—mommies! And you assist them with the most important people in their life—their babies!” He acknowledges that the job can mean long hours and sleepless nights, but he describes it as “very joyful.” He’s excited to be working at VVRMC, where so many of the staff have been employees for 15 years or more. “Longevity says a lot about what it’s like to work somewhere,” Dr. Hernandez says. Dr. Hernandez is fluent in both English and Spanish. He and his wife, Juana, have three children scattered across the U.S. One lives in San Antonio, though, and they’re excited to be living closer to her now. When he’s not working, Dr. Hernandez hopes to be found fishing. “There’s a big lake in Del Rio I’m looking forward to spending time at,” he says. Y está muy feliz de volver. “Viví en Del Rio hace 29 años durante 10 meses y descubrí que la comunidad estaba formada por las personas más agradables”, recuerda. “Y cuando volví de visita en mayo de este año, fue lo mismo”. El Dr. Hernandez es el nuevo obstetra/ginecólogo de Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC). Viene a VVRMC después de haber trabajado durante 15 años en su consultorio particular en el Valle del Río Grande. El Dr. Hernandez eligió convertirse en obstetra- ginecólogo porque “uno se ocupa de las personas más importantes del mundo: ¡las madres! Y uno les ayuda con las personas más importantes de su vida: ¡sus bebés!” Reconoce que el trabajo puede significar largas horas y noches sin dormir, pero lo describe como “muy gozoso”. Le entusiasma trabajar en VVRMC, donde gran parte del personal han sido empleados durante 15 años o más. “La antigüedad dice mucho sobre cómo es trabajar en un lugar”, dice el Dr. Hernandez. El Dr. Hernandez habla inglés y español con fluidez. Él y su esposa, Juana, tienen tres hijos dispersos por los EE. UU. Una vive en San Antonio y están entusiasmados por vivir más cerca de ella ahora. Cuando no está trabajando, el Dr. Hernandez espera que lo encuentren pescando. “Hay un gran lago en Del Rio donde me gusta mucho pasar el tiempo”, dice.
