10 Keeping Well/Mantenerse Sano PT ‘changed my life’ A PATIENT GETS A NEW LEASE ON LIFE WITH THE HELP OF PHYSICAL THERAPY Y VONNE FUNK started having trouble with her shoulder. “I couldn’t hold my grandbabies or play with my dog,” she says. “You never realize how precious your health is until you have a problem.” When the pain became unbearable, Funk went to seek care. She was prescribed physical therapy for her frozen shoulder and occupational therapy for carpal tunnel. “I really didn’t know what to expect,” she says, “but it was a wonderful experience from day one.” By the time Funk came to Val Verde Regional Medical Center’s (VVRMC) Rehabilitation Department, her shoulder was frozen. She couldn’t move it without severe pain. “I had to carefully plan every movement,” she says. “And all the movement was extremely limited and very painful. My quality of life had been severely impacted, and it was just getting worse every day.” The physical therapy staff worked with Funk to develop a plan to get her moving again without pain. “I had to just trust in their expertise,” she says. “They got right down to the issue and were very thorough in everything they did. Having people dedicated to my improved health made all the difference.” Now, Funk has her life back. She has a new purpose in life. “I never realized how much I took my health for granted,” she says. “It was a real eye-opener. I am dedicated to staying physically fit and healthy. Cuando el dolor se volvió insoportable, Funk solicitó asistencia. Le recetaron fisioterapia para el hombro congelado y terapia ocupacional para el túnel carpiano. “Realmente no sabía lo que me esperaba”, dice, “pero fue una experiencia maravillosa desde el primer día”. Cuando Funk llegó al Departamento de Rehabilitación de Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC), su hombro estaba congelado. No podía moverlo sin sentir un intenso dolor. “Tenía que planificar cuidadosamente cada movimiento”, señala. “Y todos los movimientos eran extremadamente limitados y muy dolorosos. Mi calidad de vida se había visto muy afectada y empeoraba cada día”. El personal de fisioterapia trabajó con Funk para desarrollar un plan que le permitiera volver a moverse sin dolor. “Solo tuve que confiar en su experiencia”, dice. “Abordaron el problema y fueron muy meticulosos en todo. Tener personas dedicadas a mejorar mi salud marcó la diferencia”. Ahora, Funk ha vuelto a nacer. Tiene un nuevo propósito en la vida. “No me daba cuenta del valor que tiene la salud”, dice. “Esta experiencia fue realmente reveladora. Ahora me esfuerzo por mantenerme en buena forma física.
