V AL VERDE REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER (VVRMC) has a new top nurse. Chief Nursing Officer Jess Nuutinen, RN, MSN, MBA, arrived in April. Prior to her new role, Nuutinen was a CNO for HealthPartners, a Minnesota-based health care organization. Before that, she was a nurse administrator for Mayo Clinic Health System. As a CNO, Nuutinen oversees the nursing staff at VVRMC. Her role includes ensuring that patients receive high-quality care that’s based on best medical practices. She also serves as a liaison between nurses and physicians. Recruiting and retaining nurses at VVRMC is one of her initial goals. Nuutinen grew up in a small northern Wisconsin town called Ashland. Nursing was her second career, though she thought about going into nursing after high school. But first she worked in the insurance industry. Eventually she went back to school to pursue nursing, earning two master’s degrees. Nuutinen became a registered nurse in 2002. She worked in hospitals providing direct patient care before moving up to administration. “I still visit with patients and their families,” she says. After her husband retired, the couple moved south, and Nuutinen continued her health care career at VVRMC. “Rural and community health have always been my passion,” Nuutinen says. Outside of work, she enjoys fishing, boating, golfing and traveling with her husband. They have two grown children, a son and a daughter, both of whom live out of state. Antes de su nuevo cargo, Nuutinen trabajó como CNO en HealthPartners, una organización de atención médica con sede en Minnesota. Antes de eso, fue administradora de enfermería en Mayo Clinic Health System. Como CNO, Nuutinen supervisa al personal de enfermería en VVRMC. Su trabajo incluye garantizar que los pacientes reciban atención de alta calidad basada en las mejores prácticas médicas. También sirve como enlace entre los enfermeros y los médicos. Reclutar y retener enfermeros en VVRMC es uno de sus objetivos iniciales. Nuutinen creció en una pequeña ciudad al norte de Wisconsin llamada Ashland. La enfermería fue su segunda carrera, aunque pensó en seguirla después de la escuela secundaria. Pero primero trabajó en la industria de los seguros. Después de que su marido se jubiló, la pareja se mudó al sur, y Nuutinen continuó con su carrera de atención médica en VVRMC. “La salud rural y de la comunidad siempre ha sido mi pasión”, dice Nuutinen. Cuando no trabaja, disfruta pescar, pasear en bote, jugar al golf y viajar con su marido. Tienen dos hijos grandes, un hijo y una hija, y ambos viven en otros estados.
