45 years of love O LIVIA CASTRO has been with Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC) for 45 years. “It doesn’t seem that long,” she says with a smile. “But when I count the years, yes.” Castro began her career at VVRMC in the kitchen in 1966 when she was 15 years old. She worked part time while she was finishing school. “I was going to be a teacher,” she says. “But when I worked in the kitchen, I saw the nurses coming in with their white uniforms and their starched caps and I changed my mind.” Castro first went to school to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). She was an LVN for 12 years. During that time, she decided to continue her education to become a registered nurse. “I had two kids and a husband, and I worked full time,” she says. “It wasn’t easy, but I graduated from the first RN class they had in Del Rio.” She has been an RN in obstetrics for 33 years. “I’m blessed,” Castro says. “I’m healthy and so are my kids. I’ve seen a lot of people come and go here. Each one of them has brought something to the table. But I’m still here. I love working here.” She feels being an RN is very rewarding but cautions those who want to pursue the same career. “Make sure being a nurse is what you really want to do,” Castro says. “It requires a lot of love.” Olivia Castro recently celebrated 45 years at VVRMC. /Olivia Castro recientemente celebró 45 años en VVRMC. 45 años de amor O LIVIA CASTRO lleva 45 años con Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC). “No parece tanto tiempo”, dice con una sonrisa. “Pero cuando cuento los años, sí”. Castro comenzó su carrera en VVRMC en la cocina en 1966 cuando tenía 15 años de edad. Trabajaba a tiempo parcial mientras terminaba la escuela. “Iba a ser maestra”, dice. “Pero cuando trabajé en la cocina, vi pasar a las enfermeras con sus uniformes blancos y sus gorras almidonadas y cambié de idea”. Los primeros estudios de Castro fueron para convertirse en Enfermera Vocacional con Licencia (LVN, por su sigla en inglés). Prestó servicio como LVN durante 12 años. Durante ese tiempo, decidió continuar con sus estudios para convertirse en enfermera matriculada. “Tenía dos hijos y un esposo, y trabajaba a tiempo completo”, dice. “No fue fácil, pero me gradué de la primera clase de enfermeras matriculadas que tuvieron en Del Rio”. Ha prestado servicio como enfermera matriculada en obstetricia durante 33 años. “He recibido muchas bendiciones”, dice Castro. “Estoy sana y también mis hijos. He visto mucha gente ir y venir aquí. Cada uno de ellos ha aportado algo. Pero sigo aquí. Me encanta trabajar aquí”. Considera que ser enfermera matriculada es muy gratificante, pero les advierte a aquellos que quieren seguir la misma carrera. “Asegúrense de que ser un enfermero es lo que realmente quieren hacer”, dice Castro. “Requiere muchísimo amor”.
