He loves his job,
despite the tears
E RICK VELAZQUEZ has the kind of job that
makes children cry when they see him
coming.
“It’s really hard to draw blood
on kids without bringing on the
tears,” says Velazquez, a 24-year-old
phlebotomist at Val Verde Regional
Medical Center (VVRMC). “They
know what is going to happen, and
they usually are crying before I can
even get started.”
So how does he calm down a child
who’s upset before the needle stick?
“I talk to them. I introduce myself,
start talking to them about my day. I ask them how
they’re doing in school,” Velazquez says. He doesn’t
try to hide the fact that he’s going to poke a needle
into their arm. “I let them know exactly what I’m
doing as I’m doing it. I just tell them it’s going to feel
like a little ant bite.”
Velazquez has been taking blood from patients at
VVRMC for more than two years now. And, despite
the occasional tears, he really enjoys his job.
“I like talking to the patients,” Velazquez says.
“Some of them are elderly people, and they want to
talk about how their day is going. They have their
stories to tell, and they want someone to listen to
them and appreciate them. I like helping them out
any way I can.”
Velazquez teaches phlebotomy classes at the
community college. He is certified as a basic
emergency medical technician (EMT) and hopes to
teach EMT courses soon.
“That would be awesome,” he says.

niños cuando lo ven venir.
“Es muy difícil sacarles sangre
a los niños sin que lloren”, cuenta
Velazquez, un flebotomista de 24 años
de Val Verde Regional Medical Center
(VVRMC). “Saben lo que va a pasar,
y generalmente lloran incluso antes
de que yo empiece”.
Entonces, ¿cómo hace para calmar
a un niño que está llorando antes de insertar la aguja?
“Hablo con ellos. Me presento y empiezo a contarles sobre
mi día. Les pregunto cómo les va en la escuela”, dice Velazquez.
No intenta esconder el hecho de que va a insertarles una aguja
en el brazo. “Les hago saber exactamente lo que estoy haciendo
mientras lo hago. Simplemente les digo que se sentirá como
una pequeña mordedura de hormiga”.
Velazquez ha extraído sangre de pacientes de VVRMC
durante más de dos años. Y, a pesar de las lágrimas
ocasionales, realmente disfruta su trabajo.
“Me gusta hablar con los pacientes”, afirma Velazquez.
“Algunos son personas mayores y quieren hablar de su día.
Tienen sus historias para contar, y quieren que alguien los
escuche y los aprecie. Me gusta ayudarlos de la manera que
pueda”.
Velazquez da clases de flebotomía en la universidad de la
comunidad. Tiene certificación como técnico de emergencia
médica básica (EMT, por sus siglas en inglés) y espera dar
cursos de EMT pronto.
“Eso sería increíble”, cuenta.
