The videoconferencing service
at VVRMC allows psychiatrists in
Houston or Austin to see and speak
with people in Del Rio during an
outpatient appointment. Equipment
includes a video screen and two-way camera.
Telemedicine helps meet a local need in rural
communities like Del Rio, says social worker Jaime
Ortiz, LCSW. Without it, many Del Rio residents would
have to travel to San Antonio or San Angelo to see a
psychiatrist. The distances involved might keep some
people from getting care that could improve their lives.
“All of us could be potential patients, because we all
face stresses and changes in life,” Ortiz says. “It’s nothing
to be ashamed of or to fear.”
A VIRTUAL VISIT
Patients receive an evaluation and a treatment plan
that may include medication management, along with
a referral to talk therapy. “The doctors also talk to the
patients about how they’re sleeping, eating and other
things in order to give them a good plan of care,” says
nurse Mary Ann Maldonado, LVN.
The telemedicine doctors at VVRMC see patients of
all ages. They can help with conditions such as:
